Travel Alerts: 5 August 2019

Every day, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) issues notifications regarding health and safety, natural catastrophes, advice against travel, warnings about political activity or demonstrations, strikes, and many other global events and updates that can affect us when we travel.

Here are some of the latest notifications…




Date Issued

Hong Kong

Updated information on protests throughout Hong Kong. There are a number of planned protests beginning at 1pm on 5 August, including in: Admiralty, Wong Tai Sin, Tai Po, Tuen Mun, Mong Kok, Shatin, Tseun Wan.



On 2 August, a number of small explosions occurred in Bangkok. We are monitoring the situation closely. We advise British Nationals to remain vigilant, to follow the advice of local security authorities and to check our Travel Advice.



Updated information on political demonstrations. You should check the local media for the latest information, be vigilant, and avoid any demonstrations.



On Friday 2 August, a reported 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck off the south-west coast of Java, affecting multiple areas including Jakarta; if you’re in the region, you should monitor developments and follow the advice of local authorities; Summary – removal of information about demonstrations that occurred following the May 2019 general election.


Sri Lanka

Entry requirements section (Visas) – updated information on visas on arrival following an announcement by the Sri Lankan Department of Immigration & Emigration.

Addition of information about the annual Perehera celebration in Kandy in early August.



Demonstrations are taking place frequently in the downtown area of Asunción, particularly in the proximity of government buildings and offices, often without warning. You should avoid large gatherings, monitor local media and follow the guidance of local authorities.



Safety and security section (Political situation) revised information on regional political and security issues.



Change to advice against travel for the state of Manipur; the FCO no longer advise against travel to the city of Imphal or the Meiti Valley areas; advice for the rest of the state has been lowered from advice against ‘all travel’ to ‘all but essential travel’.


Costa Rica

Summary and Safety and security (Methanol poisoning) section – There have been a number of deaths and cases of serious illness in Costa Rica caused by drinking alcoholic drinks containing methanol; you should take care when buying any spirit-based drinks.
